RuPaul on three screens at the cineplex?

by Jerry Semas

Here's the story... of a lovely Amazon! Not surprising that you'll see drag diva RuPaul in the upcoming To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, but mid-America will be aghast when they see her in The Brady Bunch Movie. Yes that's right, America's favorite drag queen is playing Jan Brady's high school guidance counselor in the film version of the ABC series. Beyond RuPaul's own festive ambience, the film will have its own air of camp. Set in modern times, the Brady family will wear brightly colored '70s polyester clothing complete with vests, cuffed bell bottoms and the works. The American

Francisco screening. The story follows Ryuzaki, a former fitness magazine editor who is obsessed with two things, finding a copy of Italian director Pier Pasolini's film Salo [don't look in Cincinnati!] and reuniting with his ex-lover Kitami. Ryuzaki had missed the film during its release since he was in prison for accidentally hacking off his lover's arm during an intense sexual encounter. Now out on the streets and on a quest for a one-armed man, he travels with the severed limb preserved in a long jar. With movies like this, who in Japan needs drugs?

If you can't get enough of the campy true antics of Ed Wood after seeing Tim Burton's film, check out the new video documentary,

country where one doesn't have to do anything too well or too long to become well-known.

Another project has the grand glamour queen working with Disney Studios (Walt must be turning over in his freezer) to star in his own short film. The working title is Electra Lite, which RuPaul plans to direct. Producer Randy Barbato describes the project as a spoof and sort of cross between the Naked Gun movies and a Chanel commercial. "It will be wacky, stupid, obvious, and hopefully clever." RuPaul is also working on a tongue-in-cheek autobiography to be called Letting It All Hang Out.

What a tongue twister! Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love, a category-resistant play by Canadian Brad Fraser, may be heading to the big screen. Fraser himself, has written a script which Denys Arcand (Jesus of Montreal) is scheduled to direct. The comedy-thriller has had

success

with off-Broadway productions in Toronto, Montreal, Chigago, Berlin and Tokyo. The work is a portrait of a circle of friends awkwardly looking for romance of varying kinds. Fraser is also known for his play Poor Superman. In sympathy to theatre owners with small marquees, the film's title will be shortened to Love and Human Remains.

You certainly didn't have to pick me up off the floor after hearing singer/pianist Michael Feinstein's revelation that he has had sexual relationships with men. In an interview for Advocate, Feinstein, responding to the question of if he considers himself gay, said: "I consider myself a human being who is capable of loving another human being." Oh, please! What press agent wrote this response for him? Remember when Elton John was only bisexual?

Those who were looking forward to the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical, Muscle, take heart. The project isn't dead, but only delayed. Muscle was originally planned as half of a pair of one-acts, the other being Passion, which became a full length musical. Sondheim and Lapine will be going back to the drawing boards in hopes of bringing life to Muscle within the next year.

-Quentin Crisp

Also using the same name as the Sondheim/ Lapine project is a film from the land of the rising sun. This other Muscle is a heavy-duty erotic S & M Japanese film, directed by Hisayasu Sato. Only 60 minutes long, the film is so intense, absurd and grotesque that many viewers walked out of its recent San

titled Ed Wood; Look Back in Angora. Released through Rhino Video, you can purchase the tape for only $20 or maybe rent it from a video store near you. And if you decide to be appro-

priately dressed when you go out and find it, remember that the

sweater buttons go in the back.

Another new and more important video release is The Wedding Banquet. One of last year's most successful foreign films, the movie follows a Taiwanese guppie in New York, who plans to marry a female artist just to get his parents off his back. But chaos and laughter erupt when the parents fly in for a surprise visit and the wedding plans go crazy. Directed by Ang Lee, you may find better success at renting the tape than places to purchase it.

Currently in pre-production for Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is How To Make An American Quilt, based on Whitney Otto's best seller. The script is by Emmy award winning lesbian writer Jane Anderson (The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom). Jocelyn Morehouse (Proof) will direct this significant women's film.

Another long awaited and major lesbian film project is Jane Chamber's Last Summer at Bluefish Cove. Executive producer Judy Miller has been trying to film the play for over eleven years. Though other studios, including Showtime have passed on the project, there is new hope growing out of a recent stage production at Los Angeles' Tiffany Theatre. Back in the early 80's, a stage version had a successful run in San Francisco and featured Lee Meriwether in the lead with her daughter Kyle Aletter playing her (eventual) lover.

Don't miss Reality Theatre's Ohio debut of Claudia Allen's Movie Queens, a fresh comedy about the relationship between two actresses from the Hollywood of the 1930s to Broadway of the 1980s. The story reunites two famous actresses to play opposite each other in a modern-day play while their past unfolds through flashbacks. Their catty remarks and side glances quickly show that their relationship had once been a very serious love affair. The Boston Globe wrote, "Movie Queens brings liberating freshness to the stage" and Bay Windows called it "A delightful comedy, a real winner." Performances begin October 27. Call Reality Theatre in Columbus at 614-294-7541 for reservations.
